A program has been set up by an indigenous woman in Guatemala to give an education to girls who otherwise might not get one.

Gender inequality is a big issue in Guatemala especially when it comes to education. Of the estimated 2 million children who don't attend school, the majority are indigenous girls living in rural areas.

More than 50% of the population is indigenous in Guatemala. They're among the country’s most disadvantaged with limited schooling, early marriage, frequent childbearing, and chronic poverty.

Karla Rax is trying to provide underprivileged girls with the knowledge they need to move forward.

She tells the girls in her program that when she finished sixth grade, her father wanted her to stop going to school to help her mother. But she fought to continue her studies. Today, Karla is a student of Environmental Engineering.
